Credit enquiries
A lender checks your report when you apply for a loan or card. Too many checks can lower your score.
No enquiries on your credit report
No lender has checked your report recently. That is good for your score.
What your score means
Credit scores fall into four broad bands. Lenders use them to judge risk.
- 750–900Excellent
Lenders see you as low risk; more loan choices
- 650–749Good
Good chance of approval at fair terms
- 550–649Fair
Fewer options; rates may be higher
- 300–549Poor
Approval is harder; work on improving it

What affects your score
- Payment history – Paying every EMI and card bill on time matters most.
- Credit use – Using a small share of your card limits helps. Many lenders like to see under 30%.
- Length of history – Older accounts show a longer track record.
- Credit mix – A mix of loans and cards, handled well, helps.
- New applications – Many applications in a short time can lower your score for a while.
- Defaults and settlements – Unpaid or settled loans can pull your score down for years.
How to improve your score
- Pay on time – Set reminders or auto-pay for every EMI and card bill.
- Use less of your limit – Keep card balances well below the limit.
- Keep old accounts open – They lengthen your credit history.
- Apply only when you need to – Space out new loan and card applications.
- Check your report – Look for mistakes and get them corrected.
- Clear overdue amounts – Pay off or agree a plan for any dues.
